In 1984 Alexander Robotnick joined "Giovanotti Mondani Meccanici", an
Italian multimedia -oriented group, and composed sound-tracks for
theatre works, videos and video-installations.
For the same group - whose name was later shortened to GMM - Robotnick 
produced an album ("GMM" by Materiali Sonori) and a single. Its B side 
"Love Supreme" rapidly became a real "cult" for many DJs and was 
included in a number of compilations, among which "Desert Island" by 
Alex Patterson & Norman J.
Hot Elephant Music - Robotnick's label - has decided to make this track 
available on the digital market, releasing it in 4 versions:
1) Love Supreme (edit) - a simple re-edit by Robotnick for easy use by 
present-day DJs.
2) Love Supreme (groove) including only the rhythmic part, a useful tool 
for DJs.
3) Love Supreme (orignal 12")
4) Love Supreme (original) - the original track from the above-mentioned 
album.
The highlight of this track is Stefano "Cocco" Cantini, a well known 
Italian Jazz musician, improvising on sax , giving the track its unique 
flavour and introducing dance music fans to authentic jazz sound.
This Robotnick's work is obviously inspired by the famous track "A Love Supreme" by John Coltrane.

If you’re an avid Italo disco fan like me, you’re probably aware of the fact that Alexander Robotnick used to churn out the one heavy hitter after the other back in the 80s. Those days have long since gone, and the now 60+ producer has turned to more a more electrohouse-based sound, although we occasionally still can hear fragments from his disco past.

Now this release is something quite spectacular, so let’s start off with a little history lesson first. In 1984, during the heyday of Italo, Alexander joined the Italian Multimedia Group MMN and produced an album titled GMM by Materiali Sonori and a single, of which its B-side now gets a release on Robotnick’s Hot Elephant Music. It’s called Love Supreme, a track inspired by A Love Supreme by famous jazz musician John Coltrane.

The EP holds four different versions: an edit, a groove remix, the original mix plus the original 12” versions. The original version is marked by an unmistakable, yet quite futuristic 80s jazz vibe poured over an exotic proto-disco rhythm. Vintage keys, bongos and shreds of sax melodies are combined into what eventually sounds like the stuff Crockett & Tubbs would be blasting out of their convertible car stereos while on patrol in Miami Beach. Sensual but credible, hot but cool like Wayfarers and pastel suits. You get the idea. The edit and original 12”mix are respectively a short and longer mix, while the Groove version is a funky floorfiller for dancefloors that require a bit of 80s hipshakin’. Hot.

Our verdict:
Alexander Robotnick lets us re-discover one of his biggest tracks from over 25 years ago, and we can’t help but to salute him for that. Fans of (Italo)disco and 80s soundtrack: this one’s for you.
